AoS ship visitor honoured

Huge congratulations to AoS Weymouth Ship visitor and Our Lady Star of the Sea, Weymouth parish contact Lt Cdr Mark Kemmis Betty who received the Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service Award.
Mark was presented the award by HRH The Princess Royal in a ceremony at Trinity House London on 26th September 2017.
His wife Judy was also present at the event. Mark served in the Royal Navy for 23 years, and during his naval career, commanded HMS Eastbourne during the Cold War.
Now he spends much of his time volunteering for the AoS, providing invaluable practical and spiritual support to the many seafarers he comes across.

In 2011, he spent weeks assisting the crew of cargo ship Westwind II who were stranded on their ship without pay or food. In 2013, Mark was called by the Coastguard who told him that a 35ft Trimaran Starship had been wrecked on the Portland harbour breakwater and the two man crew had been taken off and had no where to stay.
When a sailor went missing after a huge wave hit his Trimarian in the English Channel in 2014, Mark visited and supported the man while he was hospitalised at Dorchester Hospital.
Mark met the two crew men, the owner of the craft and his father in law at the Coastguard Office in Weymouth and took them home for the night. Well done and well deserved Mark!
